The gastric balloon is a weight loss procedure that reduces your stomach’s capacity for food.

However, bariatric surgery is divided into three types: restrictive surgery that helps the patient to eat less (stomach reduction); malabsorptive surgery that affects absorption (no or reduced absorption of certain nutrients); restrictive malabsorptive surgery, which is a combination of the two.

Gastric bands and gastric sleeves are purely restrictive weight loss procedures in that they reduce the amount of food that can go into your stomach. They work by decreasing appetite and making you feel full quickly. Both are performed using keyhole surgery.

A gastric bypass is also performed using keyhole surgery and is a restrictive malabsorptive weight loss procedure. The size of your stomach is reduced therefore restricting the amount of food that you can eat. This surgery changes the gut hormones that control appetite and satiety so patients feel less hungry. It also involves bypassing part of your small bowel which reduces the amount of food that can be absorbed. Due to lack of absorption this procedure requires the patient to take food supplements for life to avoid any vitamin or nutrient deficiencies.

The average excess weight loss after bariatric surgery depends on the type of weight loss surgery, your commitment to it and to your eating patterns. Research has shown that, on average, patients lose 20-30% of excess weight after gastric balloon, 50-60% after gastric banding and gastric sleeve, 60-70% after gastric bypass surgery.
